Back in the 70's when Arnold Schwarzenegger was competing in bodybuilding, his best friend of shorter stature, Franco Columbu, was a bodybuilder/powerlifter, and he decided to join the strongman competition. Franco stood 5'5" tall, and everyone in the strongman competition were taller than him.
This is what I feel like every time I enter the gym. I look smaller than everyone else in the room, like I'm the only one who is this small. It bothers me to no end, because there is almost NO sense seeing such huge men walking around in the gym like that. They seem to be standing almost 7 ft tall. It makes no sense! Why does that exist?? The stats say men around 5'9 is popular in USA, then how come I constantly see massive 6'5" tall men everywhere I go? Something isn't right. Seriously, they're, like, two feet taller than me. It's really weird!
Anyway, back to the subject, Franco Columbu was extremely strong for his size. In his prime, he deadlifted 700 lbs, and bench-pressed 500 lbs. That is very strong! Now, here's the video of Franco competing in Strongman:
(beware, whatever happened to Franco is graphic near the end of the video. He broke his leg there. If you don't want to see it, just stop at the refrigerator race)
Near the end of the video, Franco was carrying a heavy refrigerator on his back in a race. Because Franco was trying to run than walk while carrying a fridge, his leg was bent clean in the opposite direction. Because his leg was bent like that, he never came back to the strongman competition ever again.
Now, here's the reason why I brought it up; it feels like the tallers were freaking out that they were being beaten by someone smaller than them, so they went all out like psychos against him or something. I dunno. Maybe it's normal, because com'on, it's a competition, they HAVE to beat someone, but still, you could tell by their reactions. They seemed mean-spirited against Franco or something. Felt like the tallers were forming into a group against him mentally. I'm deaf, so no closed captioning in the video didn't help. If there was any heightist comment mentioned in the video, please let me know. Anyway, major thing I've been thinking since I saw the entire video is that I noticed the tallers were beating Franco every time there was a race. Any kind of speed involved with legs by carrying, or pulling weights from point a to point b, the tallers seemed to win them against Franco every time. This, I believe, caused Franco his downfall. I believe this caused Franco to feel inadequate with his strength, so he had to catch up with them by going just a little faster, but that broke him badly.
Tallers thought they were stronger than Franco, but I think that is far from the truth, because they simply used their longer legs to push them faster. They were NOT stronger than Franco. These taller had longer limbs, and DIDN'T RUN, but Franco HAD TO RUN TO MATCH THEIR SPEED. I find this heightist, but again, that competition was old, and they didn't know better. It's like putting Floyd Mayweather to fight in the heavyweight division. It just doesn't work that way.
I mean, come to think of Usain Bolt. Usain is a tall person himself, and always won in a race. I believe the real answer is because he has longer limbs that help him move forward faster, not because he's "fast". Having long limbs can help you move faster, normally. It's not shocking, nor is it impressive in any way. By the way, is he the first tall sprinter? It seems like nobody mentions him for being the tallest sprinter. I think this is kinda odd.
What do you think of the video link above? Is there something heightist going on in the video or am I the only one thinking this?
