I watched SOUL and it is a good movie but the heightism shown in that movie stuck out.
The movie is about a black school teacher. He isn’t shown as a thug.
His father (a black guy) is shown as a good, attentive father. He didn’t abandon him to buy cigarettes.
His mother and female relatives are shown as hard-working women. They aren’t shown as living on tax payers dime.
But the only villain shown in the movie is a short woman - Terry. She is one of the guardians, all of them are tall - the tallest characters in the entire movie.
But Terry is shown conspicuously short. (Second from the right)
In the movie, Terry is shown as having OCD and she is over zealous about doing her work.
Other guardians don’t like her and are shown to barely tolerate her. Terry forces everyone to give herself the ‘employee of the month’ award.
Pixar went out of its way to show black community in a good light. Racism isn’t fashionable these days. But heightism is always in fashion.
Pixar people know that if you want to show a character (who is doing her job) in a bad light, show her short.
Even in their earlier movie Inside Out, the character for the angry emotion was a short guy (Napoleon complex). But the lead character was a tall woman.
They didn’t use a Karen or a Shaniqua but used a short guy for anger.
Just like racism, heightism too is encoded in our genes. People will virtue signal for blacks only if racism is politically frowned upon. If racism becomes a career-ending move, then people at Pixar will virtue signal for blacks.
Let’s hope one day people loose jobs for heightism, that’s they only way animators stop showing short characters in negative light.
