Went to the library and came across an encyclopedia based on the stats and biographies of superheroes and villains. What boggles my mind is how many superheroes and villains are in the 6 ft range. Any shorter than 5’6” is considered a joke character or just butt ugly villains. This makes me feel sick.
Yes, this is only fiction. They’re just fictional characters, but what matters is how the writers, producers, and fans THINK of how their characters should look. Their opinions are often skewed and incorrect, but they still do it because they can’t help themselves. This is just proof of how the modern media dictates our perceptions on what they think a short man should be.
The females in there are also ALWAYS in the 5’6”, 5’7” range, which I find really odd since most women are usually shorter than that. The most serious superheroines are in the 5’7” to 6’0” range. Funny thing is they do make shorter females more cool than short male characters. A 5’3” girl has cooler powers with cooler looking costume than a male character of the same height. Females are often skinny but have powers similar to Superman, but they refuse to do the same for short muscular guys.
Most male characters in 5’5” to 5’8” range have names with “boy” or “lad” in it but their abilities and powers are quite good. For instance:
Beast Boy- 5’8” 150 lbs
Cosmic Boy- 5’7” 145 lbs
Element Lad- 5’7” 140 lbs
Ferro Lad- 5’7” 155 lbs
Polar Boy- 5’5” 140 lbs
Star Boy- 5’8” 160 lbs (and Starman is 6’1”)
Superboy- 5’7” 150 lbs
Vibe- 5’7” 145 lbs (probably the only cool short character with no “boy, kid, or lad” in the name)
This bothers me because even though they have incredible powers, they’re still called boys, not men.
The characters shorter than 5’5” are very few and a lot of them are often ugly or deformed, or sometimes clown-ish. Lots of them are villains as well. I find this insulting. For instance:
Hector Hammond- 5’1” 156 lbs
Krona (in green lantern series)- 3’5” 62 lbs
Mad Hatter- 4’8” 149 lbs
Mr. Mxyzptlk (this is actually what they spelled it)- the book says his height is variable, but in most comics and cartoons, he is obviously seen as short. I mean, really short.
The Penguin- 5’2” 175 lbs (his height ranges back and forth from 5’6” to 4’8” in many different Batman series)
Sleez- 4’3” 181 lbs
Trickster- 5’7” 150 lbs (though not short as others, but he’s clown-ish in the short men category and also a villain)
Ventriloquist and Scarface- Scarface is a short character. They mention only a ventriloquist’s height to be 5’11”, but Scarface is the main villain here and he’s depicted as small and short. Still not heightist to me in the slightest and it’s a cool idea, but it’s an interesting observation. They don’t blame the ventriloquist with normal height but rather blame the short doll.
Yes, there are so many villains in 6 ft to 8 ft range, but they’re a lot cooler and have more badass factor to them which the writers do not give to short villains.
Keep in mind that all the characters I listed above are basically 90% of all the characters I found in the short category.
The good guys with much cooler powers and cooler costumes are almost always in 6 ft to 6’5” range. I could not type them all in here because that would take me a week to do so. I bet there are about 500 of those characters in 6 ft range. That is a lot! That’s one of the examples on why 6 ft men think they deserve more than guys shorter than them.
What do you think?
